Because we’ve had terrible weather last week (-22°C real feel, brrr) and because my skin turns to sandpaper in cold weather – especially the hands – I’ve been looking for that perfect hand cream that will nourish my skin the way it needs to be nourished. After a quick research on the interwebs I found a list of the top 10 hand creams and chose Burt’s Bees because of its high percentage of natural ingredients.
Burt’s Bees is an American brand so I wasn’t that optimistic that I’d find it in Romania, but another quick search later and to my delight I found it on a popular cosmetics site. So because it turned out that there were quite a few products from this brand on the site, I decided to try one of each: one lip balm (because as I user of matte lipstick I need to keep my lips unchapped), one body lotion (because I’ve given my Soap&Glory body butter to my mom, who also suffers from dry skin) and one hand cream (the thing I actually needed to buy). I quickly added them to my cart and made the purchase and I was so excited that I went on to read even more about the products I’d already bought.
Upon further investigation (I read many user reviews) I found out that a lot of people said that my new miracle hand cream had an awful smell – rancid, medicine like, horrible. But despite the smell, they still recommended this hand cream as the best that they had ever used. So I was still hopeful, despite the general opinion that this hand cream has a bad smell.
So I thought I’d give my two cents about these products, especially since they’re not quite known in Romania.
The lip balm
Believe it or not, the lip balm is 100% natural! It’s made with coconut oil, sunflower seed oil, shea butter, cocoa seed butter and natural vanilla flavor. Need I say more? It’s super nice to use, smells great and actually leaves your lips soft. Of course, because it’s made of butters and oils it’s slightly moist (ugh, I hate that word) on your lips, but it absorbs super quickly and doesn’t remain on your lips like a greasy alien film. I put it on at night before I go to sleep and when I wake up it’s no longer on my lips (as opposed to other lip balms I’ve used).
The body lotion
Gotta admit, I’m not a good user of body lotion. I find it such a drag to put it on after the shower when all I wanna do is get in bed (especially during winter). So I didn’t get to use so much of this lotion, but what I’ve used so far has made me happy. It smells super nice and it’s not super heavy, so it absorbs pretty quickly. It’s made with cocoa and cupuacu (which I’m not actually sure what it is) butter and also contains olive and sunflower oils. The fragrance is 100% natural cocoa butter and vanilla so the smell is subtle, but nice. Overall, a good body lotion because the results are quick and visible.
The hand cream
Ah, and here we are, the miracle bad-smelling hand cream. Which it turns out doesn’t actually smell that bad. If you’ve ever used muscle pain ointments you know the smell (Sindolor, Puterea Ursului for my Romanian readers). My boyfriend says the smell reminds him of a forest of Christmas trees, so I guess it’s not that bad after all.
I wanted to use this hand cream at work, just because I wash my hands so often, but it turns out I can’t do that – because the smell is strong and the cream is kinda heavy. So I decided to use it before going to bed and I tell ya, my hands magically heal over night! Due to the harsh weather, I had some ugly wounds on one of my fingers and this was actually where the need for a good hand cream came from. After a week of using this hand cream, my wounds have totally healed and my skin is as good as new. It’s really amazing, I’m really impressed with this hand cream.
I recommend it with all my heart – if you can get over the smell, it will do wonders for your hands! It’s greasy and heavy, but it absorbs pretty quickly despite this. So my recommendation is put on the cream and go to sleep and by the morning your hands will be so soft!
The cream is made with shea and cocoa butter and also has sesame oil, which I understood gives it that controversial smell. My friend Ioana came over last weekend and used it and she was really excited about it. Said the smell doesn’t even bother her at all. During her stay she put it on twice and said that she’ll buy one for herself. So I’m not just being subjective, it’s been tried and tested by two people so far and they both loved it.
So I know that the International Women’s Day is already passing, but you can order some Burt’s Bees skin care products this weekend and call it your gift for yourself for Women’s Day. No one will know and your skin will thank you for it 😉
Happy International Women’s Day! 🙂
